ID_Tanzhaus Residencies 2024
The ID_Tanzhaus team is happy to announce a new round of residencies! This Call for Proposals invites regional project initiators who work and experiment with dance and choreography to apply for residencies.
In 2024, ID_Tanzhaus offers the studios at Z – Zentrum für Proben und Forschung, from June 10 through June 22. ID_Tanzhaus seeks to design a flexible scheduling structure that meets different needs. For example, there will be a possibility to accommodate projects that need two hours a day, as well as those who need a full week. This means all applicants must be willing to share the space and communicate their needs in advance in order to realize as many projects as possible.
Applicants who are freelancers and active in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region are eligible for ID_Tanzhaus Residencies 2024.
The selection process for residencies will be anonymous and peer reviewed. The application period starts on March 25 and will close on April 21, 2024.
What the Residency Offers
The residency offers access to the studios at Z – Zentrum für Proben und Forschung. There’s one 160 m2 studio, specially equipped for dance with a sprung floor, and one 50 m2 studio with padded dance marley. What’s also available is a conference table suitable for team meetings and a printer. Production, press, technical support, dramaturgical, and opportunities for networking will be available for the duration of the residency and provided by the ID_Tanzhaus team. Projects will also be offered photographic documentation.
Residencies can take place during the time frame from June 10 to June 22, 2024.
Residency projects will be remunerated for their public presentation. Project initiators (maximum 2) can decide whether they prefer to receive 2.500,00 EUR each for organizing and conducting their public presentation OR a one-time performance fee of 500,00 EUR for each participant involved in the project for the public presentation (maximum 10 participants/project).
All fees will include VAT (if applicable) and require a signed contract and correct invoice for each person and corresponding payment.
Public Presentation
Residency artists will be expected to organize a public presentation to share the result of their endeavour with an audience of their choosing. Proposals should describe how they envision their public presentation and which audience(s) they want to reach. The presentation can be realized according to your own ideas: It can be a showing, a run-through, a workshop format, or a discussion round. All suggestions are welcome. The public presentation should take place between June 20 and 23, 2024 (location to be confirmed).

For the application, please prepare the following texts having removed all mention of artists’ names or institutional affiliation to allow for a completely anonymous peer review:
- Brief description of the project for public relations (limit 450 characters).
- A short concept for the residency (limit 2.000 characters).
- A short concept for the public presentation (limit 1.000 characters).
- Description of target audience, plan for promotion and dissemination (limit 1.000 characters).
The residency is linked to a public presentation that can be organized according to the wishes and needs of the applicants. Some questions to consider: Who do you want feedback from? And how do you want to reach them? Who is your project for?
Criteria for Selection
The selection will be made by a jury of peers from different states in Germany according to the following criteria:
- Research question’s social relevance and clarity (Projects should connect to current events, issues in public discourse, and/or topics that are under-reported or marginalized).
- Experimentation and innovation in their proposal for a public presentationformat that transmits the process and results of their research.
- Articulated strategy for reaching their identified target audience.
Please note that only applicants living in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region will be considered. Housing and travel costs are not included in the residency.

Residencies 2023

We would like to invite you to Mariia Filippova‘s Open Studio on Thursday, 14.12. at 7pm in the Z-Zentrum (Schmidtstraße 12, 60326 Frankfurt am Main - just behind Frankfurt LAB) and get an insight into her work!
We will screen the film “Vodurudu” (by Anatolii Savichko and Apache Crew, which Filippova is a part of) and then host an artists talk, which we wish to develop into a relaxed exchange at a round table with some snacks.
Duration: approx. 90 - 120 minutes. The film will be in Ukrainian spoken language with English subtitles. The talk will be held in English spoken language.

“Vodurudu is a ballet-film with folkloric and improvisational elements. Through the expression of folk in the arts of music and dance, the work becomes an act of revival of Ukrainian culture, captured in the frame of a film format.
A group of street dancers of various genres gathers in the city, united by the impulse of movement. The movement quickly becomes specific, it turns into a search. This search leads the group to the work of classical Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych, who is not only known for “Shchedryk” (known in the English-speaking world as “Carol of the Bells”) but also for his liturgy - the first composed specifically in the modern Ukrainian language. The role of the dancers is that of translators, who try to bring the memory of Ukrainian melody and poetry into the present, translating the deeply-rooted spirit, character, and will of our people for the modern world.
This plastic work of reflection premiered in 2021 and was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the brutal murder of the father of Ukrainian melody, Mykola Leontovych.”

Veltroyer
How do we grieve a world in ecological collapse? Can practicing grief lead to a deeper sense of doi’kayt, “hereness”? We seek to connect to traditional Jewish/Yiddish land practices and grieving rituals, creating a contemporary ceremony of grief for more-than-human worlds. What lost traditions and ontologies might allow us to become “people of land,” without ownership, sovereignty? What practices of grief might restore pathways of relation?

over and over and over
In the dance performance project "over and over and over", three performers long for a channel to tune in, to turn the singular weight of their waiting into a collective experience. It is about the experience of time shaped by waiting, and the power relations are woven into it. The important political questions and demands to understand what waiting is about. How can we understand the experience of waiting as a form of resistance in the body?

FIGURING TIT OUT
"FIGURING TIT OUT" is an investigation into composing a relational space where live music creation and movement research are remixed as supportive methods for a playful encounter among diverse tit-bodies and other material manifestations of tits beyond the body. By navigating the space through theremin’s frequencies, FLINTA* participants can experience attentive states of interaction while listening, moving and creating sounds through their bodies.

ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main strives to find less biased and more generative forms of the peer selection process. In 2023, the resident artists were again selected by a jury of four in an anonymous process.
In 2023, the jury consisted of:
- Callie Arnold, dancer and choreographer, Tamalpa Life/Art Practitioner, dance therapist (BTD), "Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist" (ISMETA) and dance pedagogue
- Rose Beermann, choreographer, director, dramaturge
- Mirrianne Mahn, political activist, theater maker and diversity development adviser and speaker
- Yvonne Sembene, dancer and artist
More general information regarding the residency program:
The residency program is a core strategy of ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main to extend opportunities and resources to diverse actors of the local independent scene.
Through an Open Call process, regional project initiators in any stage of their career who experiment with dance and performance are invited to apply.
- We value an inclusive application of the term “dance.” One does not need to be an academically trained dancer to contribute to the field of dance and choreography. That said, we respect dancers with years of training and support innovators within traditional forms.
- We especially welcome emerging and transitioning artists who are new to independent production within public funding structures.
For working and rehearsing, ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main provides artists with the spatial and technical infrastructure to realize their project, using rooms especially suited to the needs of dance. The residency includes professional support on an administrative, technical, and artistic level as requested by each artistic team.

ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main has awarded a total of seven residencies to regional dance and performance projects between May and November 2022. The very different artistic concepts all deal with contemporary topics and aim to question habits, break down barriers and transform traditions. At the end of the residencies, the results will be presented online as Digital Open Studio format.

Shivā Amiri: Trans in Trance
An intimate dance invitation to connect. Inspired by Sufi dances, Shivā Amiri creates a encounter where performer and audience fall into a trance together. Through dance, trance & storytelling, the audience is invited to connect through dance and discover their other selves. A self that no longer sees discrimination, racism & flight as the problem of others, but recognizes its own participation in it.
Carlos Díaz: The Vallejo Readings
A new way to experience poetry. Dance creates a physical image of the verses of Peruvian poet César Vallejo through dialogue. The audience will be reached by the two lyrical languages at the same time and will be involved in the creative pro- cess through their own recitation and movement. Using the texts of Vallejo, who was a migrant himself, Díaz wants to create empathy for the experience of migrants from the global south.
Michelle DiMeo: Experiencing Kinesthetic Empathy: Dance and the Visually Impaired
“Experiencing Kinesthetic Empathy” addresses dance and people with visual impairments. The artistic investigation focused on developing ways to fully engage people with signifi- cant visual impairments in dance and somatic movement practices, and what can be learned about kinesthetic empathic sensations through this process.
Eslam Elnebishy: Matter of Perspective
The residency aimed to research ma- terial that defines the relationship between emotions and the body, experimenting with how feelings and emotions shape the body and the dif- ferent ways of expressing and experiencing them. Both as individuals and as a group, the artists explored approaching an emotional physical experience with its different representa- tions and manifestations.
Eslam Elnebishy collaborated in his residency with Areti Athanasopoulou, Eri Funahashi Geen, Bilal El Had, Anya Masson, Alexander Piasente, Johannes Schropp and Laura Stellacci.
Ida Kaufmann, Laura Mirjana Hrgota-Jannene, Joanna Gruberska: Pink Fluffy Cut and Destroy
The overwhelming feeling of apathy. What can help us emerge out of it? Can fighting be a way to reconnect with our fighting spirit, with our physical and mental strength? We want to embody different bodily experiences such as feelings of frustration, powerlessness and hope. A back and forth between theory, emotional and physical research. A dance to connect physically with the public, dancing as part of the fight, a way to gain hope and strength.
Mara Kirchberg: Swallowing a Barbed Wire - How do we dance with monsters?
“Swallowing a Barbed Wire” is an exploration of the materiality of anxiety emanating from the gut. It forms a counter-movement by addressing concrete physical stress responses. Shortness of breath, muscle tension, nausea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, numbness or tremors are explored and transformed through movement, voice, as well as noise. The practice of (de)monstrating fear brings forth a monstrous matter as an act of resist- ance and empowerment.
Mara Kirchberg invited Raha Dehghani, Hanna Launikovich, Johannes Schropp, Alex Piasente-Szymański and Gisèle Gonon to participate in the residency.
Clara Reiner, René Alejandro Huarí Mateus, Jacob Bussmann und Frédéric De Carlo: local dancing
“local dancing“ is an invitation to fictional circle dances which travel through time, and have their very own reverberations. Their purpose is to serve the common pleasure. They have lately been danced, together with neighbors, at Implantieren festival in Wiesbaden, in Offenbach, and in Frankfurt am Main.
In addition, artist, performer and activist Antonina Baever has been awarded a residency in cooperation with the non-profit organisation Artists at Risk.
Selection process:
ID_Tanzhaus FRM strives to find less biased and more generative forms of the peer selection process. In 2022, the resident artists were again selected by a jury of four in an anonymous, double-blind process. None of the jury members works for ID_Tanzhaus FRM or belongs to ID_Frankfurt e.V..
