7:00pm — 9:00pm

Staatstheater Darmstadt - Ballettsaal

BIOGRAPHY Samia Yusuf Omar was born in Mogadishu in 1991 and always wanted to run. After winning all the amateur competitions in Somalia, she participated in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She arrives last because, unlike her peers, she was not prepared by a professional coach. Nevertheless, this will remain the highlight of her career. After Beijing, she dreams of participating in the 2012 Olympics in London, but the situation in Somalia does not allow her to do so. Tired of hiding, she decides to go to Europe. On July 15, 2011, she sets sail, where she will drown on April 2, 2012. Her dream rests with many other corpses at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

Based on some characteristics of my work, the use of gestures in the choreographic composition and rhythmic variety, I would like to explore together with the participants how these can take shape and develop through hands, arms, face and how certain body parts merge with each other through different dynamics and movement qualities and unfold in space. First, through improvisations, pair and group work, we will stimulate the responsiveness of body and mind. Listening and mindfulness of self and group will be brought into play. In the second phase we will work on the choreographic part, using immediately created scores in which we can apply the experience gained in the first part.
