… γλυκύπικρον ἀμάχανον … / … sweetbitter unmanageable … / … süß-bitter widerspenstig … — this is how Sappho writes about love: an experience of sweetness and bitterness that cannot be grasped or controlled. It doesn’t arise from within, but happens in the encounter with something incomprehensible — like a taste that defies classification. Sweetbitter Songs are crooked love songs that approach the shifting, disconcerting affects of being alone in longing. They follow mysterious eels, driving beats, wild theories, and anxious crabs that swallow grains of sand to keep it together.
