Struggle, women, freedom - in her piece Quartiers Libres / Performance, which premiered in 2012, choreographer Nadia Beugré confronts us with ideas and facts that we prefer to repress. A powerful dancer who sings, dances and sometimes screams. She threatens to get tangled up in the endless microphone cable that chokes her around the neck like a snake. A world of rubbish takes her space. She fights her way free, empowers herself and struggles to reach the people around her. Because while Africa drowns under a mountain of plastic waste and rubbish, the global North remains inactive, apathetic and uninvolved. And it is precisely this lack of commitment that Nadia Beugré wants to reverse by mingling with the audience. Very directly, she expresses with her body all the things that cannot be said, feelings that are too complex. Carried by oppressive sounds, she creates a free space in her solo in which the cry of an African woman for justice can be heard.
