“Performing Class” is an artistic research project by Romuald Krężel in collaboration with dramaturge Agata Siniarska and performer René Alejandro Huari Mateus. It explores choreographically different ways of performing and representing one’s class identity.
The project analyses how social class manifests in bodies, how it is performed and expressed in different socio-political contexts.
Inspired by Chantal Jaquet’s book „Transclasses: A Theory of Social Non-reproduction”, among others, the artists focus on corporeal experiences of class mobility, which is an experience of many people nowadays. The social class we belong to is being performed by us before we learn it and even before we are aware of its meaning and importance. It is culturally and socially constructed, manifesting itself in gestures, looks, styles, attitudes, and appearances that have been practised and learned across generations.
How deeply is this trans-generational training embodied?
