A(IDA) TO Z(ERO)

Verdi’s “Aida” is the prototype of an operatic spectacle from the heyday of industrialisation. At its centre: the iconic triumphal march – a fossilised popular tune to whistle along to. The music theatre collective Matter of Facts Studio connects e.g. the “Aida” material with contemporary cruise industries: do people today also adopt an operatic attitude when they are seized by wanderlust? What does opera (ab)use as a (coal-fired) power station of emotions? Is the voice an emission and what does the audience contribute to the energy footprint of an aria? Together with oud player Abed Harsony, performer Asja Mahgoub, clarinettist Heni HyunJung Kim, bassist and gambist Rebecca Lawrence and the Hamburg choir Klub Konsonanz, Matter of Facts Studio questions the opera system and its colonial heritage. In the end, Arabic harmonies overwrite Western European operatic tradition, the triumphal march is disarmed and an anti-aria becomes an alternative source of energy – will hearts catch fire one last time?
