How Do You Respond?

"How Do You Respond?" is a series of ongoing discussion groups examining workplace situations which arise in the performing arts and negatively impact people facilitated by Gala Moody and Michael Carter from OFEN Co-Arts Platform.

OFEN Co-Arts Platform brings common topics to discuss that will be familiar to anyone, working within any function, in the dance and performance industry. Throughout the series of four two-hour online discussions, scenarios will be unpacked and broader industry themes will be identified which relate to the situation. Then, discussions will be guided on how we can respond to situations, while respecting needs including autonomy, body sovereignty, and rest.

We hope that this exchange can support your practice and aid in advocating for better working conditions in the performing arts. These sessions are offered free of cost and will be facilitated in English. Registration is required.

OFEN Co-Arts Platform

Dancers Gala Moody and Michael Carter co-founded OFEN Co-Arts Platform in 2012 with the aim to research and engage with fair working practices in the arts. As dancers, they have worked in dance workplaces including Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Ultima Vez / Wim Vandekeybus, Nacho Duato, Romeo Castellucci, Charleroi Danses, Peiter Ampe, The Australian Ballet, Damien Jalet and others.

As part of ID_Tanzhaus FRM’s capacity-building offerings, we invite members, artists and producers to two Anti-Racism workshops: Critical Whiteness and BIPOC Empowerment.

Two experts in the fields of racial justice and the arts who will hold space for our community to engage in this difficult yet necessary dialogue. This is a small step towards long-term efforts to address diverse forms of historical marginalization in our field and society.
These workshops are offered free of cost and held in both German and English.

Moderated by Shiva Amiri and Yili Rojas, and hosted by ID_Tanzhaus FRM.

BIPOC Empowerment Workshop

Saturday, July 17, 2021 I 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

In the workshop, we will take space to share our different intersectional experiences as BIPOC artists in a majority white art and culture industry.

  • What art do we make and who is it aimed at?
  • How are we doing in these spaces?
  • What do we need to feel good in these spaces?
  • How can we get out of individualization and create collective structures in the direction of change?

Critical Whiteness

Sunday, July 18, 2021 | 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The workshop is aimed at white positioned people (people who do not experience racism) from the cultural sector. The workshop focuses on reflecting on power relations, intersectional discrimination, and reflecting on one's own positionality. The workshop offers participants space to talk about insecurities, to reflect on the effects racism has on those affected and how they are involved in it as white positioned persons.

  • How are art spaces occupied in the German context and how should they be occupied?
  • For whom do we make art?
  • Who do we address and who do we exclude?
